First: What Do Crypto People Actually Spend On?
Before designing anything, we dug into our data. Not what users said they wanted — what they actually did with their Spritz cards.
Two things jumped out.
Restaurants. Constantly. Our users eat out a lot. Young, urban, socially active — this tracks. Dining was by far the most consistent high-frequency category.
Travel. Less often, but big. Flights and hotels showed up less frequently, but the transaction sizes were meaningful. And when we asked users directly, travel was the category they wished had better rewards. $40 back on an $800 weekend trip feels different than earning pocket change on a latte.
So we had our categories: restaurants (high-frequency, emotional) and airlines + hotels (aspirational, high-ticket). Give users 5% on the stuff they actually get excited about spending on.
The Hard Part: Making 5% Not Bankrupt Us
Every cashback program faces the same math problem. Users want the highest possible rate, always on, no strings. But interchange revenue (what card issuers earn per transaction) doesn't cover a perpetual 5% without hiding costs somewhere.
Here's how our competitors handle it:
We didn't want to play that game. But we also couldn't offer 5% on every dollar, indefinitely, with zero conditions and survive.
The answer: time-boxing.
How the Shopping Spree Works
Instead of an always-on rate that slowly bleeds us dry (or forces us to add hidden fees later), we built 5% cashback into short, high-energy windows triggered by card loads.
Load your Spritz Card → your 3-day Shopping Spree starts automatically. During those three days, every purchase at airlines, hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies earns 5% back as Spritz Credits — real cash you can use to reload your card or send to your bank.
Load more during the month? You can unlock a second 3-day spree. If the first is still active, the second queues behind it. That's up to 6 days of 5% cashback per month.
Outside an active spree, there's no base rate. That's intentional. It's what makes the 5% real instead of a marketing mirage.
Why Sprees Beat a Flat Rate
We debated this a lot. A flat 1.5% on everything is simpler to explain. But sprees win on three levels:
They hit harder. A flat 1.5% across a month of spending is background noise. A 3-day spree at 5% over a weekend trip — dinner Friday, hotel Saturday, flight home Sunday — that's a tangible reward you actually feel. Same dollars, completely different experience.
They're tied to the thing that makes this possible. The spree starts when you load your card. That's not random — loads are how the economics work. Load → spree → spend → earn → load again. The cause and effect is immediate, and users get it intuitively.
Time pressure works. Apple does it with Daily Cash. Bilt does it with Rent Day. Amazon does it with Prime Day. A 3-day window turns spending into an event. Our beta users told us they'd schedule dinners and book travel around their spree. That's exactly the behavior we wanted — the Spritz Card becomes the card you grab when it counts.
Why Cash, Not Tokens?
Easiest decision we made.
Most crypto cards pay rewards in their own platform token. Your "5% cashback" is actually 5% in CRO, WXT, or NEXO — tokens whose value is tied to whether the issuing company has a good quarter. If the token drops 40% (and several have), your cashback drops with it.
Spritz Credits are cash. Reload your card with them or send them to your bank. You earn 5%, you keep 5%. No token roulette. And also, Spritz doesn't have a token - in spite of being crypto-native, we work differently.
The Beta: 500 Users, Zero Drama
We launched the Shopping Spree in Q4 2024 with 500 beta users. We weren't testing whether people like free money (they do). We were testing whether anyone would try to game it - and if so, how?
At 5% with no fees, the incentive to exploit is real. We watched for everything:
Across the entire beta: no meaningful abuse. People just… used the card normally. Went to dinner. Booked flights. Earned their 5%.
The built-in guardrails (per-spree caps and the 3-day window itself) also helped. It turns out it's hard to manufacture enough fraudulent spend in 72 hours to make gaming worthwhile.
Launch Day: +136%
After a couple of months of beta, we opened the Shopping Spree to all US and Canada users in February 2026.
Day one: transaction volume jumped 136%. Not just existing users spending more — a wave of new usage came specifically for the cashback.
One data point, but it told us the thesis was right: offer a real rate, on categories people care about, in a format they understand (cash, not tokens), with a mechanic that's dead simple (load → spree → earn). People show up.
A Realistic Example
Let's say you load $500 onto your Spritz Card at the start of the month. Your 3-day spree kicks in. Over the weekend, you:
- Grab dinner Friday night — $80 at a restaurant → $4 back
- Book a hotel for a weekend trip — $350 → $17.50 back
- Grab brunch Sunday — $45 → $2.25 back
- Uber to the airport doesn't qualify (not a spree category) → $0
Total earned: $23.75 in Spritz Credits from a normal weekend of spending. No staking. No fees. No token that might be worth half as much next month.
Load more later that month? Second spree unlocked. Another 3 days of 5% on your next trip or dining plans.
How the Economics Work
"How do you afford 5% with no fees?" Fair question.
We designed the spree so the economics work for both sides. Rewards are concentrated into short windows, tied to load events, and structured with per-spree guardrails — so the 5% headline rate translates to a blended cost we can sustain. It's not a loss leader hoping for a miracle. It's a mechanic where the math actually closes.
The program will evolve over time — all programs do. But we're committed to transparency: no quiet downgrades buried in a terms update, and at least 30 days' notice before any changes to how sprees work.
